Our History

A Legacy
Built to Last

1835
Foundation

The Lady Mico Charity was established by an Act of Parliament in England and Wales, with Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton as its first chairman. Under his leadership, the Charity rapidly expanded educational opportunities throughout the British colonies — establishing teachers' colleges and elementary schools across Mauritius, the Seychelles, and the West Indies.

1966
Survival

Today, The Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica remains the only surviving institution from that original educational movement — the longest sustained educational charity legacy in the West Indies. As the organization evolved into the Lady Mico Trust, its mission continued through sustained support for teacher training and educational advancement.

2000
Custodianship

Professor The Honourable Errol Lawrence Miller, OJ, became the first and only citizen outside the United Kingdom to serve as Trustee of the Lady Mico Trust. In 2000, the Jamaican assets of the Trust were transferred to The Mico Foundation, which now serves as the chief custodian of its enduring mission, history, and institutional legacy.
